Packaging
How to package a parcel to avoid damage in transit
Even though we take the best possible care with all articles, they require internal cushioning and strong external packaging to protect against knocks and shocks.
Internal Cushioning
Cushioning material should be packed around all sides to prevent any shocks being transmitted through to the contents. Recommended materials:
Bubble wrap
Expanded polystyrene chips or "peanuts"
Corrugated cardboard
Shredded or rolled newspapers
Polyethylene foam sheeting
Wrap the item enough times so you cannot feel the shape of the object.
Items packed together in one container should be individually wrapped and separated from each other with cushioning material.
Even heavy items require internal cushioning to prevent movement of the contents during delivery, as this may damage the outer packaging.
External Packaging
Cardboard cartons are generally strong enough to ship material of average weight and size.
The strength of the carton required will depend on the weight, size and nature of the goods being packed.
Reinforced envelopes are suitable for soft articles.
Wooden crates should be used for particularly heavy items.
DIY Double Wall Cartons
If double wall board is not available, you can make a single wall carton double strength, as described here:
Take two cartons of similar size. Cut off flaps. Pack contents in smaller carton.
Invert larger carton and slide over the smaller carton (see illustration).
Use a carton of the right size - large enough to hold the contents and the cushioning material firmly, but not too large to allow movement of the contents.
Reducing The Size Of Cartons
If a suitable carton is not available, you can reduce the size of a carton, as described here:
Mark desired height of carton (line A in illustration).
Determine size of top flaps and mark a second line (B).
Split all corners of box to line A.
Cut along line B.
Fold along line A.
Sealing Parcels
Parcels need to be sealed with a strong, self-adhesive tape.
Choose a tape no narrower than 38mm wide.
Avoid using standard household or stationery tape.
Apply the tape along the lengths of the flaps and along the ends to seal the openings of the carton.
Never use metal staples.
For large and/or heavy parcels we recommend you use plastic strapping or binding in addition to tape.
The strapping should be applied twice from end to end and twice from side to side.
The binding should be tight enough to remain in position throughout delivery of the parcel, but should not cut into the edges of the carton. Parcels should be strapped individually, not together.
Addressing
Addresses should be bold, legible and accurate.
You should place the address and sender's address on two sides of the parcel.
The addressee's details should be more prominent than those of the sender.
Please address your parcels using the following format:
Attn: Mr. Robertson
Bendigo Equipment Ltd
173 Park Road
Swindon
Wiltshire
The sender's address is important not only if the item needs to be returned, but also in case the sender needs to be contacted.
If reusing cartons, please ensure any previous address is completely removed or covered up.
